Can we make sense of the data from a real spherical gravitational wave antenna?

چکیده
We report the results of a theoretical and experimental study of a spherical gravitational wave antenna. We show that it is possible to understand the data from a spherical antenna with 6 radial resonant transducers attached to the surface even when asymmetries are introduced. An in situ measurement technique is developed along with a general algorithm that describes a procedure for determining the direction of an external force acting on the antenna, including the force from a gravitational wave. The practicality of these techniques was verified on a room-temperature prototype antenna. PACS numbers: 04.80.Nn, 95.55.Ym

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

The sensitivity of resonant-mass gravitational-wave antennas has now reached h 10 ?18 , where h is the dimensionless metric perturbation caused by the wave. In order to observe gravitational wave events such as coalescing neutron star binaries and colliding black holes from as far as the Virgo cluster of galaxies, the detector sensitivity must be improved by three orders of magnitude. With such...
متن کاملSpherical Gravitational Wave Detectors
Resonant bar gravitational wave detectors have improved greatly over the last 40 years but are currently completely outperformed by laser interferometer detectors. Spherical detector configuration has several advantages over conventional bar detectors and can be considered as the next generation of resonant gravitational wave antenna. In this report, I will give a brief introduction to gravitat...
متن کاملSolution to the inverse problem for a noisy spherical gravitational wave antenna
A spherical gravitational wave antenna is distinct from other types of gravitational wave antennas in that only a single detector is necessary to determine the direction and polarization of a gravitational wave. Zhou and Michelson showed that the inverse problem can be solved using the maximum likelihood method if the detector outputs are independent and have normally distributed noise with the...
متن کاملFake signals caused by heavy mass motions near a sensitive spherical gravitational wave antenna
This paper analyses in quantitative detail the effect caused by a moving mass on a spherical gravitational wave detector. This applies to situations where heavy traffic or similar disturbances happen near the GW antenna. Such disturbances result in quadrupole tidal stresses in the antenna mass, and they therefore precisely fake a real gravitational signal. The study shows that there always are ...
